Effects:

Extract from Boswellia serrata contains high concentration of substance, which show anti-inflammatory and analgesics effects. It reduces pain of joints, muscles and muscle insertions. Substances contained in the extract show antioxidant, myorelaxative and analgesics effects reducing the negative influence of free radicals on the organism.

The plant contains firstly triterpenic acids, reffered to as boswellic acids: b-boswellic acid, 3-O-acetyl-b-boswellic acid, 11-keto-b-boswellic acid and 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-b-boswellic acid.1 Some sources mention six acids.2
The plant has strong antiflogistic effect. Many studies that show this effect were made.
A veterinary study has been made in year 2004 in Switzerland. This study investigated extract effect on treatment of joints and spinal column inflammation in dogs. 29 dogs with chronical joints and spinal column inflammation were used for this study. 25 dogs had osteoarthritis and degenerative changes. Dogs received an extract (400 mg/10kg) once a day for 6 weeks. Already after two weeks significant efficacy in 71% (from 24 animals) has been seen. Treatment results evaluation of individual dogs has been made after 6 weeks. Local pain, weeping, tense walking reduction was observed. Five dogs had diarrhoea or constipation, but only in one case this disorder was related to the treatment.3
A double blind randomized trial has been made in year 2003. This study investigated efficiency and tolerance of treatment of patients with knee osteoarthritis. 30 patients were registered in this study. 15 patients received extract, 15 placebo for 8 weeks, than followed washout period and than those that had received placebo, received extract and vice versa, for 8 weeks again. All patients they got the extract mentioned lower knee pain, flexibility increase and oedema decrease. Radiological examination showed no changes. Showed differences between both groups were significant and clinical relevant. Treatment was tolerated very well, only small gastrointestinal difficulties were observed.4
The extract takes effect in chronical ulcerosis colitis treatment. Some studies were made. In Heidelberg extract effect has been studied in year 2001. A randomized double blind trial was made. 44 patients received extract, 39 patients received mesalazine. The results showed that there is no diference between mesalazine and extract, but the tolerance of extract is expressively better than of mesalazine.5 next study has been made in the same year. 17 men and 13 women in the age of 18-48 years were registered in this study. 20 of them received an extract (900 mg a day in three doses for 6 week), 10 of them received sulfasalazine (3 g a day in three doses for 6 weeks). In group treated with extract 18 patients showed improve in one or more observed parameters. In control group 6 patients had the same results. The study showed better tolerance in treatment with extract again, the efficiency seems to be very good.6
A study from year 2003 investigated immunomodulatory activity of boswellic acids. An extract containing 60% acetyl-11-keto-b-boswellic acid (other boswellic acids were contained in extract, too). This study was made in rats (doses of extract were 20, 40 and 80 mg/kg per os). As a standard drug dexamethasone (0,27 mg/kg per os) and natrium cromoglycate (50 mg/kg i.p.). This study showed antianafylactical and mast cells stabilisation effects of extract.7
In year 2005 a study that has investigated antioxidant activity of some extracts in oil substrates has been made. Essential oils and triterpens from Boswellia showed satisfactory activity in sunflower oil and good activity in virgin olive oil. This study showed that Boswellia can be used in cosmetics, too.8
